ISO 17493 and ASTM F2894 - Heat Degradation

ASTM F2894, Standard Test Method for Evaluation of Materials, Protective Clothing and Equipment for Heat Resistance Using a Hot Air Circulating Oven, and ISO 17493, Test Method for Convective Heat Resistance using a Hot Air Circulating Oven, are methods commonly used to evaluate the heat resistance and thermal shrinkage of flame resistant clothing. Materials are placed into an oven at 260°C (500°F)and evaluated for melting and dripping, ignition, separation and shrinkage. ASTM F2894 is one method cited by NFPA 2112 and requires an evaluation before and after three industrial simulated wash cycles. Oven testing is also used to determine heat degradation classifications in ANSIS 105 for hand protection.
